As you all know, Jordanian tweeps are the most who create hashtags on twitter… Yesterday’s one was #MyFavoriteJordanianWord and I for sure participated😀 Anyway, mohammadJH wrote: سيدي… I’ll tell you what’s the story behind this word. And I’ll blog in Jordanian Arabic! It should be cool!

أبوي الله يخليلنا اياه خدم بالجيش حوالي 25 سنة. ولما تقاعد راح اشترى بك أب 4×4 من الدنمارك و قرر يصير مزارع.  طبعا كان كل ما ينزل عالمزرعة يلاقي اشي مسروق: الشتلات، حاووز المي، أدوات الزراعة و اخر اشي الشيك🙂 المهم صرف مصاري الدنيا وبالاخر يئس وسافر.

طبعا انا كنت صغيرة يمكن صف سادس أو سابع و كنت أكيف لما يرضى ياخدني معه لأنه كان في شلال صغير كنا نسبح عنده بعد  ما نسقي الشجر. بلا طول سيرة، مرة كان بحكي مع مزارع و ما كان هالهبية انه على قد حاله الزلمة و بابا كان يضل يحكيله سيدي سيدي. أنا طبعا ما صدقت على الله متى راح الزلمة وسألت بابا ليش كان يناديه سيدي. قلي: الملك حسين الله يرحمه كان ينادينا سيدي، شو بدك اياني أنادي الناس؟

I believe that this word has come from the military and since almost every Jordanian family used to have at least one member serving at the army forces; it had the chance to spread widely. I don’t personally find it annoying or something… It’s just like when some people are used to call people يا حبيب قلبي or something… I even find it more humble than other words (especially if used from top to bottom -hierarchically of course- ).

    the secretary in our office he tells me seedy every time and i find it annoying ,, but i don’t tell him to stop it cos he might get ofended ..

    well i dont like this word at all
    sede we sedik allah
    once i called 911 and i reported a car acc and he asked me about the address and i was and i said shokran ostaz and he got pissed off and called me after a while and told me never call a police man anything else sede and once again and again and again
    any ways i will never used this word
